Introduction to Julie Peloza, LPC

I am delighted to introduce you to one of our newer clinicians. Julie Peloza, LPC, has been such a great addition to our child and adolescent unit. I can’t even begin to tell you how excited we are to be able to introduce Julie to the Central Illinois community! Let’s begin the interview.

Jenn: Where did you get your Master's degree, and what is it in?

Julie: I got my Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Capella university in 2021.

Jenn: Julie, What is your official license?

Julie: I am currently a Qualified Mental Health Professional (QMHP).

Jenn: What made you decide to work at The Mental Wellness Center, Julie?

Julie: I like the supportive and educational environment that the TMWC brings.

Jenn: What excites you about being at The Mental Wellness Center?

Julie: I am excited to be a part of a team. I look forward to learning from each other and gaining new skills.

Jenn: What made you want to become a therapist?

Julie: I have wanted to work in mental health since middle school. My family has a history of mental illness and substance abuse which were part of my drive for working in this field. I have also had my own experiences in counseling which were very helpful.

Jenn: Who are the people that you thrive on seeing?

Julie: I enjoy working with middle-school-aged clients. I remember being at that age and how tough things were!

Jenn: Everything I have heard from our clients says that you are also skilled with that age group, Julie! What are the issues that you LOVE working with?

Julie: I find myself most fulfilled working with adjustment disorders, anxiety, depression, self-esteem and body image issues. I enjoy working with others to build resiliency through learning coping skills and identifying strengths.

Jenn: What sets you apart from every other therapist in the community?

Julie: I have had my own experiences in counseling and come from a family with a mix of mental health and substance abuse issues. My own experience in therapy has given me a view from “the other side” and has helped me have the ability to empathize with clients in a unique way.

Jenn: What is it about working with people that you love?

Julie: I like to be a guide for those who are struggling. There are times when clients don’t have anywhere else to turn, don’t have a support system or are facing some of the toughest challenges of their lives - I want to be there during these times to help clients work through these challenges.

Jenn: I think that’s such a crucial thing to stay cognizant of Julie. Can you tell me what your favorite modalities are?

Julie: I find psychoeducation very important because it brings insight into issues the client and family are experiencing. I use techniques from CBT, DBT, art therapy and play therapy.

Jenn: Julie, how do you best connect with your clients?

Julie: It is important to be transparent and genuine. Every client is different - my job is to meet them where they are at and determine goals collaboratively.

Jenn: Julie, tell us your favorite self-care techniques. How do you decompress?

Julie: I enjoy spending time with my husband and two cats. I also decompress by playing video games, watching movies, crafting, and going on walks.

Jenn: Is there anything else that you want people to know?

Julie: I’m accepting new clients. If you want to set up a new appointment, you can call the office at 309-807-5077 or email the office at info@TheMentalWelllnessCenter.com
